Book Review Of “The Sun Is Also A Star” By Nicola Yoon

“I love this part of getting to know someone. How every piece of new information, every new expression seems magical…”

Daniel Jae Ho Bae (The Sun Is Also A Star)

The Sun is Also a Star is an absolutely breathtaking and deeply inspiring book. Nicola Yoon takes the reader into what seems like an ordinary day in New York City. Although, this day is anything but ordinary and consists of 12 hours filled with intense emotions.

The female main character named Natasha and her family will be deported to Jamaica because they are illegal immigrants. Natasha has lived in New York since she was eight years old and does everything she can to stay there. Meanwhile, the male main character named Daniel, a Korean-American, mostly follows his parents’ wishes. They want Daniel to go to medical school, but he wants to be a poet. Regardless of his dreams, Daniel follows his parents’ wishes until he spots Natasha on the way. They meet in a music store, and Daniel is attracted to Natasha. He tells her this, but she can’t concentrate on anything else when she only has a few hours before being deported. Furthermore, they are two distinct individuals. Natasha believes in science and logic, whereas Daniel believes in fate and destiny, and that things are “meant to be.

What happens next takes place in a single day. There are some chapters in this book that discuss science, philosophy, history, and Fun Fact: You will not find them irrelevant. It all came to an end with the story. The characters are also well developed and one can see their perspective-changing by the end of the book. Written from the perspective of various people this novel makes you realize how much we can impact someone’s life by our actions. Many people may define this book as instant love, but it’s so much more. Because the chapters are short, the book moves quickly, a beautiful way of storytelling and it’s difficult to put down! This book is for those who are looking for a spectacular book that seems like it is based on reality, not a sappy romance novel with a predictable ending.
